STANDING IN THE SMALL ROOM that served as his technology and communications center, Kabilan Vengai felt strong. His trip to America had been worthwhile. In spite of the complications, he had returned home with money, the new software and, most importantly, the ability to move forward with his campaign. Dilvan was already ensconced at his computer station, working on installing the software.

His second in command, Rajan, entered the room and sketched a salute. The two men briefly embraced.

“I just heard of your return,” he said. “How did you find America?”

“Profitable,” Vengai said with a grin. “The programmer did his job and developed the software, which Dilvan is installing now. As soon as it’s up and running, we’ll see how developed it truly is.”

“That is excellent news,” Rajan said. “You should be proud.”

“I will be proud when we succeed in our aims. What news since I’ve been away? One of the men told me that you’ve taken an interest in the Daniels girl. Is that a problem?”

Rajan laughed and clapped him on the shoulder. “You know me better than that, Kabilan. She’s an attractive woman. I saw no harm in taking some pleasure in her company.”

Vengai nodded. “And what of the ransom?”

“It hasn’t been paid yet,” Rajan admitted. “Though I expect it to be.”

“Perhaps it’s just time to kill her and cut our losses,” Vengai said.

“We would do better, I think, to put some additional pressure on her father. It may be possible that he doesn’t believe in our sincerity.”

“You could be right,” Vengai replied. “Let’s go.”

They went into the main living room of the house where Daniels was sitting on the floor with the children. “You will come with us now,” he said to her.

She got to her feet obediently and followed them to Rajan’s office. “Sit,” he said, indicating a chair. When she hesitated, one of the guards shoved her into it, and her eyes immediately went to Rajan. Vengai wondered if his second would have the strength to destroy his new toy.

“Miss Daniels,” he began, “I trust you’ve found your…accommodations acceptable?”

“It’s not the Fairmont in San Francisco,” she said, “but considering the circumstances, I have no reason to complain.”

Vengai laughed. “And yet, Rajan tells me that your father has yet to pay your ransom. I am not convinced he will, that it would be better to kill you and dump your body in the ocean. Rajan says that perhaps your father needs more urging to cooperate.”

“I…he’ll pay,” she stammered. “He wouldn’t just leave me here to…to die.”

“We will call him,” Vengai said, “and you will convince him. If he does not assure me of his intentions, then tonight you will sleep at the bottom of the bay.” Vengai typed a code into his cell phone and then handed it to Daniels, leaving the call on Speaker. She tapped in the number and her father picked up immediately.

“Hello?” he said. “Who’s this?”

“Daddy! Daddy, it’s Heather.
